Living Postcolonial Anglicanism: Pastoral Perspectives from the Global Church

This course, taught by Dr. Kwok Pui Lan and Bishop Ian T. Douglas, will introduce the demographical shift in the Anglican Communion and the implications for Anglican identity, history, and theology and invite students to consider how being part of a postcolonial, global family of churches informs their ministry.

Global Anglicanism is becoming increasingly postcolonial as churches in the former colonies of the West continue to find their voice and authority in an increasingly polycentric Anglican Communion. This online course introduces laypeople and clergy to some of the realities and possibilities of the contemporary, postcolonial, global Anglican Communion. Participants will gain pastoral perspectives to be leaders in a global family of churches.

The primary text will be the new anthology entitled Living Postcolonial Anglicanism: Prospects for a Polycentric Anglican Communion (Bloomsbury Publishing, 2025), edited by the instructors. The book includes essays from Anglican leaders from the postcolonial world, several of whom will be guest lecturers in the course. Students will be asked to consider how being part of a postcolonial, global family of churches informs their ministry.

This course will be capped at 40 students.

This course is being offered on a pay-what-you-can basis and we’re anticipating that we’ll exceed the course cap very quickly. To keep things as equitable as possible, enrollment will be via a lottery system.

This course is not for credit (students do not need to be enrolled in an educational institution) and designed for those who are ready to commit to:

  • Weekly participation in a live, 2 hour virtual class
  • Completing weekly readings
  • Reflecting on study questions shared in advance
  • Engaging deeply with the instructors and peers via our online learning platform and during class
  • Putting your learning into action — through an op-ed, direct action, sermon, blog post, or other project

The pay-what-you-can tiers are $300 / $150 / $75 and financial aid available if you are selected for the course and unable to pay.

If you aren’t selected to be a student, there will be a one-day symposium this fall, entitled Living Postcolonial Anglicanism: Prospects for a Polycentric Anglican Communion we encourage you to consider attending.
