EDS Announces Grant Recipients for "SUGARCANE" Screenings

December 2, 2025 Latest News

Episcopal Divinity School (EDS) is delighted to announce the recipients of the "SUGARCANE" Faith Community Screening Grants. This initiative was launched to support faith communities in hosting screenings of the powerful documentary film, SUGARCANE, as part of a larger commitment to truth-telling and reconciliation regarding the history of Native American boarding schools.

We received an overwhelming number of strong applications, demonstrating a widespread and deep commitment within the church to engage with this painful history and move toward restorative justice. Five faith-based groups in Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Oregon, and Wyoming have been awarded grants up to $500 to cover the costs of the film screening including space rental, hospitality, and tribal member honoraria.

The awarded groups represent geographically diverse locations and a significant breadth of experience in reconciliation efforts, from those with deep, ongoing relationships to those relatively new to this work. Grant recipients demonstrated a strong commitment to honoring Indigenous leadership, survivor-centered engagement, and long-term engagement.

For all faith communities that applied but did not receive a grant—and for all others interested in this vital work—EDS is strongly encouraging you to still host a screening and join the growing movement for truth and reconciliation.

  • Alternative Screening Option: You can still screen the film for free as part of the SUGARCANE Faith Community Screening Tour. This includes access to a screening toolkit with discussion questions and resources. To apply for the free screening, please visit sugarcanefilm.com/faith-tour/ and email questions to [email protected]. All screenings must take place before the tour concludes on January 31, 2026.
  • Group Consultation Opportunity: If you choose to proceed with a screening, we invite you to join a group consultation with Miskopwaaganikwe – Leora L. Tadgerson on December 4th at 1:00 PM Eastern / 10:00 AM Pacific via Zoom. This session is designed to support you in developing non-performative relationships and long-term commitments to truth and reconciliation efforts. If you are interested in joining the consultation, please register here.

Thank you for the overwhelming interest in this programming. We look forward to offering additional support and educational opportunities to support healing and reconciliation efforts. In order to stay up to date on those opportunities, please ensure you are on our mailing list.
