HOME > ACADEMICS > FACULTY > JOAN MARTIN William W. Rankin Associate Professor of Christian Social Ethics Email Joan Martin The Rev. Dr. Joan M. Martin is an activist scholar. She is known for her participation in and writing on behalf of domestic and international social justice issues. Dr. Martin's work has included leadership in alternatives for women in theological education, serving as a staff person for the Seminary Quarter at Grailville and co-chairwoman in the early years of the Boston-based Women's Theological Center. She has been advisor to the Interregional Women's Commission of the World Student Christian Federation, an advocate in reproductive rights and antiracism (and former antiapartheid) movements, and most recently, interfaith worker justice movements nationally and locally. Her activism is reflected in courses which range from the traditional introductory courses in Christian ethics to courses in contemporary issues such as "Vocation and Work in Church and Society,"" The Church," [Economic] "Class, and the U.S./Global Economy," and "Social Theories and Social Movements: The Church as Change Agent." Dr. Martin also makes significant leadership contributions to the Association of Theological Schools (ATS) Committee on Race and Ethnicity, the Committee on Women and Leadership, has served in various capacities on standing committees and in sections of the American Academy of Religion nationally and regionally, and continues to be a facilitator and consultant for the Wabash Center for Teaching and Learning in Theology and Religion. Her recent publications include "Between Vocation and Work," in Feminist and Womanist Essays in Reformed Dogmatics, ed. (Westminster/John Knox Press); and More Than Chains and Toil: A Christian Work Ethic of Enslaved Women (Westminster/John Knox Press). Current positions: EDS faculty 1994-present. Past positions: Assistant pastor, West and Church of Our Savior Presbyterian Churches, Wilmington, Delaware; Executive Div. of Church and Society, NCCCUSA; co-director, Protestant Campus Ministries, Temple University; interim pastor, Tioga Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia; instructor, Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, Wyncote, Pennsylvania. Publications include: More Than Chains and Toil: A Christian Work Ethic of Enslaved Women (Westminster); "Religion and Empire," in Journal of the American Academy of Religion; and a recent essay, "With Perseverance and Unwearied Industry" in Cut Loose Your Stammering Tongue: Black Theology in the Slave Narrative, 2nd edition (Westminster). "Public Education and the Battle Over the Nature of Social Responsibility to the Nation's Children and Schools," guest editor; Areas of interest and research: Christian ethics and Christian social ethics; African American, feminist, and liberation ethics; ethics of vocation, work, and economics from Christian perspective(s); and social theories, social movements, and the Church. |
