Welcome to Episcopal Divinity School: A Seminary of the Episcopal Church

Our mission is to educate lay and ordained leaders for Christ's Church and for the world who serve and advance God's mission of justice, compassion, and reconciliation.

Episcopal Divinity School is a special place. Throughout its history the EDS community has been shaped by several key commitments: to live out the Gospel values of justice, compassion, and reconciliation; to liberate institutions and people from the grip of all forms of oppression; and to lead the Church and society with courage and compassion in an ever-changing world.

The seminary offers three graduate degrees: Master of Divinity, Master of Arts in Theological Studies, and Doctor of Ministry as well as Certificates in Theological Studies. EDS also offers continuing education courses, the Minister-in-Vicinity program, sabbatical stays, and visiting and Procter Scholar programs.

It is the policy of Episcopal Divinity School that those responsible for recruitment and admission of students; for administering and planning scholarships, programs, activities, and curriculum; for filling faculty and staff positions; and for seeking and nominating trustees; shall not discriminate on the basis of race, color, ethnic origin, sex, marital status, sexual orientation, physical disability, or age.

Today, students come from around the corner, across the country and throughout the world to be part of this unique institution.

-They come to learn with one of the best seminary faculties in the nation, an exceptional community of scholars equally committed to teaching, community leadership and spiritual development.

-They come for the chance to live in a vibrant, diverse community where people are eager to share their ideas, their stories, their faith, and their hope for the future.

-They come for the opportunity to design their own curricula according to their vocational goals and learning style, all the while engaging in a process focused on group reflection and accountability.

-They come to nurture and test their faith in an environment where worship is truly the work of the people, an inspiring and creative effort that draws on Anglican traditions, inclusive resources, alternative resources, and the contributions of other denominations present in our community.

-They come for the unparalleled resources available through partnerships with Harvard University, where EDS students can take courses at most graduate schools for no extra cost; and with the schools of the Boston Theological Institute, a consortium of nine top-notch seminaries and divinity schools in the Boston area.

-They come to be part of an institution that fully understands that the global is now local, and welcomes people of different denominations, traditions, and cultures to join our effort to learn, grow, thrive, and minister as a community.

We believe EDS is a unique place to live, work, and prepare for ministry and leadership in the world, and we welcome you to become a part of this community.

Statement of Purpose

The purpose of Episcopal Divinity School is to educate lay and ordained leaders for Christ's Church and for the world, who serve and advance God's mission of justice, compassion, and reconciliation. A seminary for the Episcopal Church, USA, Episcopal Divinity School is grounded in the Anglican tradition and committed to growing in relationship with other Christian and faith traditions. Episcopal Divinity School is an academic community of biblical, historical, and theological inquiry that respects students as responsible learners with valuable experience, supports spiritual and ministerial formation, and provides tools for the lifelong work of social and personal transformation.

The school's dedication to God's transforming mission challenges us to become an anti-racist and multi-cultural community, embodying diversity and seeking constructive change. These commitments lead to educational programs enlivened by theologies of liberation, especially the many voices of feminist, congregational, ecumenical and global studies. In our educational life we value critical intellectual engagement, prophetic spirituality, and social action. Sustained by contemplation, worship, and prayer, Episcopal Divinity School forms leaders of hope, courage, and vision to witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

This statement of purpose was approved by the Episcopal Divinity School Board of Trustees on March 1, 1998.
