At EDS, our community and spiritual life are thoroughly intertwined. We gather for daily worship and find ourselves drawn more deeply into a common spirit and a common life. When we sit around a Refectory table for meals, we laugh, challenge, and share stories - all with an awareness that God is present in the faces and voices around us. Truly, we are transformed daily by this experience of living, studying, working, and praying together.
Community life at EDS is dynamic and diverse. Bringing together many different traditions, perspectives, questions, and goals, we share a common life in our classrooms, chapel, refectory, green spaces, campus homes, and in the wider Boston area. Students come from neighboring communities, other parts of the country, and around the globe. Some are fresh from college, while others have returned from years of active ministry to spend a season in reflection. Many students are seeking ordination in the Episcopal Church, but many others are pursuing ministries in other denominations, in academia, and in the secular world. What they share is a commitment to learning and growing together.
EDS is also deeply committed to the Anglican tradition of gathering daily as a body for refreshment, remembrance, and reinvigoration as God's people. Our students, faculty, and staff share in designing and leading all worship. The EDS community also takes a leading role in educating the Church about inclusive language and we are proud of our reputation for faithfully merging the heritage of Anglican worship with contemporary models.
The Daily Office is the center of our corporate spiritual life, and Morning Prayer is offered three days a week. Other services include community and student-led Eucharists, and meditation and healing circles. Our worship draws on the Book of Common Prayer but also incorporates inclusive and expansive language liturgies and innovative resources from within the Anglican Communion and beyond, and the creative offerings of members of the EDS community. At EDS, we pray as we live: with boldness, with faith, with joy, and with hearts for God's mission of justice, compassion, and reconciliation.
