+ The Pastoral Excellence Project

About the project
In 2002, EDS applied for and received grant funds from the Lilly Endowment, Inc. Program to Sustain Pastoral Excellence for the exploration of innovative theories regarding the role of seminaries in the ongoing support and development of clergy and lay church leaders, especially those in geographically isolated areas. The proposal, titled Promoting Excellence in an Underserved Area: Rural and Regional Episcopal Pastors in Northern New England, was developed in collaboration with the Episcopal Dioceses of Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire, who share an interest in exploring this new role for seminaries in general, and EDS in particular. The project is informed by data gathered from more than 600 clergy and selected lay leaders from these partering dioceses regarding the challenges of their current ministries and their needs for resources and continuing education.

While the majority of project funds are designated to respond to the immediate needs of the partner dioceses of northern New England, our mission is also to make available to the broader church community what we have learned in this region regarding pastoral excellence and the resources discovered and developed in response to the needs of this region.
