A Thanksgiving Letter from Dean Douglas

November 22, 2017

Dear EDS Community,

I write to you on the eve of Thanksgiving, with a reflective and grateful spirit. At this time of year, many often look back over their year with gratitude for family, friends, and life events. And I am no different.

I am thankful and humbled by the opportunity to lead EDS@Union, and appreciative for the chances I’ve had in these few short months to meet some of you.  I look forward to meeting many more of you in the days ahead, as EDS transitions to its new home in New York City.

As grateful as I am for this opportunity, I am also very aware of the grief and pain that accompanies the closing of the very special place that is the Cambridge campus.  I have been moved by the rich stories and fond memories that many of you have shared with me about your time at EDS.  I thank you for sharing your hearts with me.

As we look to Thanksgiving tomorrow, I am hopeful that even in the midst of the challenging time, that we can collectively be grateful that the EDS story and legacy will endure as it did when PDS and ETS merged to become EDS.  Indeed, I am reminded of the words of Deans Harvey Guthrie and Edward Harris during that difficult time:

“The merger of ETS and PDS into EDS is neither the beginning of the kingdom of God nor one of the biggest things in the history of the Church. Its significance fades before the real issues before the Church today: racism and discrimination against women and social justice and national morality and spiritual hunger and human need of many kinds. The significance of the merger finally lies in the necessity to walk away from the structures of the past, filled with blessings as they were, into the future into which God calls us.”

Even in the midst of grief, I pray that we can look forward with gratitude for the opportunity to continue EDS’ story “into the future into which God calls us.”

I wish you and your families a blessed Thanksgiving.
