Crying Out in the Wilderness: Advent Preaching in Turbulent Times
Saturday, November 7, 2015 10:00am-12:30pm Tyler Room, Burnham Hall Episcopal Divinity School 99 Brattle Street, Cambridge, MA 02138
This event is free and open to the public. It will be live streamed at eds.edu/livestream.
Facilitated by Dr. Angela Bauer-Levesque, EDS academic dean, faculty member, and biblical scholar; and the Rev. Dr. Lisa Fortuna ’12, urban resident and assistant clergy at Christ Church/Iglesia de San Juan in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Boston.
Advent is a season of preparation. While our ears ring with the endless noise of consumerism and daily waves of violence, we strain to hear the call of the Gospel to prepare the way for justice and peace. Advent challenges us to stay awake, to cry out against injustice and announce the transformation of the earth. Preachers are challenged to speak words of truth that will enliven, educate, and activate congregations for the work of justice.
EDS’s Advent Preaching in Turbulent Times offers a forum to share wisdom and gain knowledge as we prepare for Advent 2015. The day will begin with Dr. Bauer-Levesque presenting relevant historical and exegetical information on the lectionary texts, followed by the Rev. Dr. Fortuna illuminating the texts’ connections to contemporary social justice issues and challenges we face in our congregations and communities today.
Participants will gather in small groups to workshop their ideas for preaching with one another.
